History

AWARE Worldwide is a 501 (c) (3) organization serving communities-at-large throughout Southeastern Virginia with quality comprehensive prevention education and services, and resources and referrals for long-term care, treatment/medication management of Chronic Illnesses/Disabilities/ Family Violence. We target the hard to reach, underserved population of low-income to no-income men, women and families that are living with or at risk of these social ills. We believe this is the most vulnerable population who do not have access to, nor are they aware of the resources and prevention strategies available to them to live a sustainable quality of life. We provide prevention education workshops in various venues such as churches, correctional facilities, social service agencies, colleges and universities, in addition to providing long-term community-based consumer-directed services for elderly and disabled persons enrolled in Medicaid Waiver programs. We have served the Southeastern Region since 2003, providing effective and comprehensive prevention services to persons with all types of disabilities, and to those who have risk factors of chronic illnesses/disabilities, and/or family violence.

Originating in New York City, since the late 1980s AWARE Worldwide has been on the front line fighting to stop the spread of HIV/AIDS. We have since incorporated our advocacy for the eradication of HIV/AIDS with our prevention efforts for Chronic Illnesses/Disabilities/Family Violence, which are so often interrelated.  AWARE Worldwide continues to provide assistance to, and partner with various medical facilities, social service agencies, churches, correctional, and educational institutions, to guide, inform, and train their staff members and other key stakeholders, about prevention/treatment and resources for the communities they serve.

We serve our clientele with the focus that “Prevention Is The Best Cure.”
